FACILITIES & AMENITIES :
- All regular services stop around the island at 21.00 hours. There are 24
Hour services from the centres of Lamai and Chaweng but be prepared to negotiate
depending on the distance and the number of people.
- Stores and shops all close at about 19.00 in Nathon.
Exchange counters close at 19.00 in Nathon.
- Make sure you reconfirm your flight at least 72 hours
before your departure.
- Beware of touts and guides selling inferior goods
at high prices on the beach and in town.
- Drugs are illegal in Koh Samui and Thailand imposes
spliff sentences for possession.
- The sea is rough during the monsoon season.
- Always protect yourself from the sun. It is hotter
than you think!
- Bargaining : Bargain and smile with good humor. Not
only is it fun but will also help you to get the best prices.
- Beckon waiters or anyone you wish to talk to with
the hand, palm downward, fingers straight and waving up and down. Don't
crook your finger, clap, snap your fingers or hiss.
- Buddha images should be treated with great respect.
It is against the law to take or send them out of Thailand except under
very special circumstances.
- Feet must be kept to yourself. Not on the table and
certainly not pointing at anybody.
- Flatter whenever possible. Thai's love it, especially
when you say nice things about Thailand.
- Monks are the most important people in society and
must be treated with respect at all times. Touching a monk or his robes
by a woman is strictly taboo.
- Please say "Thank you" or smile your appreciation.
The Thai phrase is "Kob Khun Krub" by a man and "Kop Khun Kha" by a woman.
- Pointing with the finger is acceptable for objects
and animals but not for people.
- Shoes should be taken off before entering a temple
or someone's home.
- Smile and people will like you. A smile can be used
to excuse small inconveniences, to thank for small services and to return
the "wai" (traditional Thai greeting) of small children and servants.
