How to get here

Travelling By Air : -

There are two ways to Koh Samui Island:

Bangkok Airways - most convenient - most expensive!

Other Domestics Budget fright - to Suratthani, then surface ... way cheaper!

Travelling with Bangkok Airways

A domestic ticket for Bangkok Airways from Bangkok to Koh Samui can be booked at any local travel agency or at Bangkok Domestic Airport. Bangkok Airways offers direct flights from various cities in Thailand...Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, just to mention a few of them, and Singapore as well. There are approx. 12 flights a day coming in from Bangkok, far less flights from or to other destinations. To avoid inaccurate or misleading information we won't give you timetables here and ask you to look up Bangkok Airways yourself. Keep in mind that the airport tax for inland flights leaving Koh Samui is 400 Baht/person.

Travelling with Thai Airways

A domestic ticket for Thai Airways from Bangkok to Koh Samui can be booked at any local travel agency. Thai Airways flies from Bangkok to Suratthani about three times daily (and back). The flight is about two thirds the price of Bangkok Airways, but will take you much longer, because bus transfer and ferry ride add up to another three hours travelling. After arriving at Suratthani Airport (about 1 hour), you can take an air-conditioned bus to Koh Samui. Tickets are also available at Bangkok Airport. The ferry transfer is included because the bus uses the ferry (busses cannot swim :-) Check out the domestic Thai Airways site for details!.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

For what kind of flight you ever decide: Do not forget your baggage! This is very important if you intend to go on to a domestic airport. Your baggage will not be redirected automatically at Bangkok Airport, so you'll have to pick it up, move to the domestic terminal and check-in your baggage again. You would not be the first traveller arriving on Koh Samui, with the baggage left behind in Bangkok.

Travelling By Ferry: -

Ferries and Boats are leaving from various piers, and if they are outside Suratthani, you'll usually have a bus ticket which includes the ferry. There are two Car Ferries, one leaving from Donsak (Raja Ferry) and the other one leaving from Khanom (Songserm Ferry). Both piers are about 70 km outside Suratthani (drive is ~ 1 hour) and are operated throughout the day. The ferry trip takes 1 hour 20 minutes to Samui. The Express Boat leaves from a pier just outside the city, but has a longer way to go and therefore takes about 2.5 hours to get you to Samui (or back). The Night Boats leave from the pier right in the heart of Suratthani. Departure time is 11 pm and the boats are equipped with simple mattresses, so you can stretch out and sleep. They reach the other side at about 5 o'clock in the morning. To sum up, the ferries are fastest and the least expensive, the Express boat and the Night boat are more expensive and take longer.

Travelling By Train & Bus : -

Railway tickets from Bangkok to Suratthani are not expensive and if you take the night train with a bed reservation in second class upwards, it's quite a relaxed way to travel. The train will take about 12-14 hours to get to Suratthani. Once in Suratthani, you'll be transferred to one of the ferry ports to sail to Samui. Usually your ticket will include the ferry. If you are in Bangkok you have to go to "Hua Lampong" Train station and by a ticket to : "Suratthani", you have multiple choices, I suggest a sleeper Fan or A/C and go over night, the Train station where you arrive is called "Punpin" which is a bit outside of the actual "city center" you will have to take a Bus in, there you will have to look out for a transfer to "Ko Samui"....I highly recommend "Samui tours" cheap and good service! There are lots of touts and so called "guides" which are ALL after your money ! They are CHEATS!!! Do NOT believe them do your bookings yourself! Otherwise you are VERY likely to pay much more then necessary! So take care! The Bus will run from Surrathani to the Ferry port, then you have to leave the bus for the ferry, the ferry will go to Ko Samui on arrival make sure you are NOT too late otherwise you might miss the bus into Samui's capitol "Nathon" from here you might take the local Taxi service (Songtheow's) to: "Harry's Bungalows-Mae Nam-Wat Napralarn", which is approx. 12-13Km distance. There is an Esso Station on the right side of the road and further another 300 meters there will be some buildings and a small "supermarket" just next to a Temple Gate. Here you have to get off the Songtheow simply ringing the bell mounted above your head somewhere....... Or call 089 6682307 or 077 447097, 077 423791 for a pick up service from Nathon. (Pick up from the ferry port charge 400 Baht!!!!)

Busses leave usually in evening hours from Bangkok and around midday from Samui. There are VIP-liners available as well as cheaper air-conditioning busses. Tickets are around 900 Baht, which is less than the train fare. Busses offer the fastest surface travel and with the constant improvement of road conditions are getting safer than in the early days. It takes all in all approx. 15 hours to go from Samui to Bangkok, including ferry and transfers. Busses leave from and go to any city in Thailand. Leaving Samui towards the North, you'll always cross Bangkok - coming to the south, any connection will go via Suratthani. Please check the ferry section for further information about boats and ferries connecting the mainland to the island.
